The Traders, an alien race, have come to Earth. With them came the collapse of Earth’s world economy. The Traders find little of value here, except manpower. They pass on some technology in exchange for slavery. Those who choose slavery work at tasks the Traders cannot, or will not, perform. One of those tasks is the harvesting of the venom of the red viper of the planet Elsinore. The venom’s purpose is a mystery that divides the Traders themselves.

There are those who have learned to extract money and technology from the Traders by playing from two sides. The Traders hire mercenaries to control their slaves, but the supplier of the armed men also sends others to fight the Traders, causing the Traders to hire yet more mercenaries.

Aaron Kane, a mercenary officer, crashes on Elsinore, Kane, under the employ of another Trader faction, is rescued by Molly Daniels and organizes a resistance to the Elsinore Traders.
Ilya Aleksandrov, an officer of the same band of mercenaries, arrives to oppose Kane – thus maximizing the fees the Traders on both sides of the conflict pay to the mercenary group.

Kane, though, has an agenda. He blames the Traders for the deaths of his wife and child. Despite opportunities to end the conflict Kane fights on, driven by his hate.

Father Domingo Ramirez, a missionary to the Traders, gains access to the dark, hot, caverns in which the Traders dwell, and finds, to his peril, the answer to the reason for the Venom.

The fates of Kane, Daniels, and Aleksandrov hang on the spiral of madness caused by the venom.

Venom eBook Roy Kimbrell

Kimbrell's Venom is a crisply-written ebook with solid roots in hard science fiction, military SF, insider observations about the realities of defense contracting, exploration of mercenary mindsets and motivations, and the timeless story of rebellion against increasingly crushing oppression. This book is, I assume, a potent first work in what will be a series of future hard SF novels, based on a well-constructed near-future setting where Tom Clancy meets H. G. Wells. Specifically, this story is a human-scale introductory slice of a larger "War of the Worlds" dynamic - a story of humans beginning the process to reclaim their home planet and their freedom from the ultimate alien outsourcers, the Traders, using off-world technology and human perseverance.

The underlying premise builds on rich and relevant analogies to past, present (and no doubt future) real world examples of how the greed and short sightedness of part of a society or civilization can blindly sell the rest of the society into serfdom or destruction. I don't know why it did not occur to me before, but this book made me realize that the forces of dealmaking and greed are a fundamental, inevitable phenomenon -- in the same sense as in "The Selfish Gene" concept, where individual organisms and whole species suffer terribly, on a massive scale, in service to the intrinsic, inexorable advancement of the genetic material through the generations. A key difference here is that, in this book and others like it, the human victims of this intrinsic (human and alien) behavior have a hope of countering these forces, albeit through great struggle and sacrifice.

The actual "sellout of Earth" that put the humans in their predicament is not part of this book - it is just a referred-to history of recent events that sets the premise, and the future promise, of larger efforts of the characters to fight another day. For the most part, the scale of this story is human, not epic - it is a multi-faceted, empathetic engagement of the reader with a variety of well-drawn, meaningful characters that represent some of the various types of players in this hard-edged universe. As you read, you are enmeshed in their mindset, living the decisions that they have to make. A number of poignant moments and memories flesh out not only the characters but the nature of the world in which they must live.

Overall, I got a lot of emotion and empathy value out of this book, and that is a strong point of it - this is not cold, detached writing, but just the opposite. The crisp pace of the book keeps the e-pages turning, and the emotional impact of the scenes stays with you to comtemplate later, at length, as you relive the scenes and the conflicts that cascade with the momentum of the story. It is another strong point of this work, that the author does not slow down to dwell on the poignant scenes with unnecessary further exposition, nor do his charaters have time to do so. But the reader will, later.

Venom eBook Roy Kimbrell Reviews

I don't usually read, but I started this book, and yes I could put it down, but I didn't want to. You know how it is with a good book, if you have a little time to read, you spend a lot.
I can't tell you the story, but I will say there is a lot of believable fiction going on here.
I recommend this book for the reader that expects to read a good $40 book and finds out that for now you can get it for $1. (boy that won't last long!) - change this line when you raise this price. You'll be OK if you do have to pay $40.
Mr Kimbrell is extremely creative or just knows what is going to happen years from now. Now I know. If you read this book you will find out that it's not what you thought.
I am a friend of the author's, and put off doing this review because I was afraid I wouldn't like the book. That was stupid, it’s good. Don't let its self-publication put you off--I've read stuff from major publishing houses that's not half as good. Roy has done a careful job honing both characters and plot. If you look, there are multiple thematic and symbolic layers in there too. Or if you just want an adventure book, it works. The only warning I would offer is for the tender-stomached there's some graphic sex/violence with a pinch of blasphemy. The setting of the novel is a tough world that does not bring out the best in most people, and forces the good people to improvise responses to terrible problems.
Kimbrell kept me riveted from beginning to end; his intriguing plot and ability to blend multiple elements together makes this book a must read for not only sci fi fans but for all readers. Throughout the story, Kimbrell pulls at your heart strings and makes you truly feel for his characters; their experiences your own. An instant classic!
This book had a number of twists that I did not see coming. The creation of the world where most of the action takes place was believable in both the characters and the planet itself. The premise of the book is also true to life and is an extension of the current mindset of "Greed is good". I did not see where this book was headed until the very end where it had a very credible finale based upon everything that preceded it in the story. I expect to see a sequel to this book and will definitely buy it whenever it is issued.
Waiting for sequel.
Venom is a fantastic read and if you love sci-fi fiction then you'll love this novel. Kimbrell's world building skills are extraordinary and his imagination is epic. I couldn't wait to "click" on the next page! Highly recommended sci-fi novel at a great price!
Picked this up on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Buying these self-published titles on is usually hit or miss, and this was a definite hit. Venom is a story that manages to do proper SciFi world building while still maintaining a plot that keeps you interested. The characters are well written and the political intrigue is something very unique in this genre.

Fans of Dune or Hyperion will love this one.
